The United States says its naval blockade has effectively shut down Iran’s maritime trade, marking a sharp escalation in the ongoing conflict, according to U.S. Central Command.

The blockade, ordered by President Donald Trump after failed peace talks, began Monday and involves warships, aircraft and thousands of personnel.

Adm. Brad Cooper said U.S. forces halted all sea-based trade with Iran within 36 hours. No vessels passed through in the first 24 hours, with several ships forced to turn back.

According to officials, the operation targets all Iranian ports along the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, including routes linked to the Strait of Hormuz.

The blockade comes during a fragile ceasefire that followed stalled negotiations in Pakistan over Iran’s nuclear program and control of key waterways.

Analysts estimate Iran could lose up to $435 million daily, putting severe economic pressure on Tehran.
